Evaluation

A thorough occupational therapy evaluation provides valuable insight into your child’s current strengths and areas of need. It serves as the foundation for building an effective, individualized treatment plan.

Evaluations take a comprehensive look at your child’s:

  • Fine motor skills (including age-appropriate grasp patterns and handwriting development)

  • Visual motor integration

  • Sensory motor processing

The evaluation process may include:

  • A detailed case history

  • Formal and informal assessments

  • Observation of your child in natural settings

  • Parent and caregiver input, which is essential for understanding day-to-day challenges and goals

If your child has a recent occupational therapy evaluation from another provider, it may be accepted in lieu of a new formal evaluation, depending on its completeness and relevance.

This initial step helps us establish a baseline and create a targeted plan that supports your child’s unique developmental journey.

What to expect on evaluation day

Your child’s evaluation is designed to be relaxed, engaging, and tailored to their comfort level. The goal is to gather meaningful information while making the experience feel as natural and stress-free as possible.

Here’s what the process typically includes:

  1. Parent/Caregiver Interview We’ll start with a brief conversation to review your child’s developmental history, current concerns, and daily routines.

  2. Play-Based Observation Much of the evaluation is done through play and structured activities that help assess fine motor, visual motor, and sensory processing skills.

  3. Standardized and Informal Assessments Depending on your child’s age and needs, we may use assessment tools to gather objective data.

  4. Wrap-Up & Discussion At the end, we’ll discuss preliminary observations, answer your questions, and outline possible next steps.
